About NCLA
Mission

Background

The NCLA was founded by Professor Tom Glynn in 1989 as a centre of excellence in laser technology.  The Centre makes its broad range of expertise and a comprehensive suite of laser systems available to manufacturing industry for the development of innovative products and processes.  The Centre interacts with industry through consultancy, laboratory-based feasibility trials, full R&D services, technology transfer, prototyping, laser safety audits and a number of tailored training courses in laser technology, applications and safety.
The Centre is also active in collaborative research within National and European research frameworks.

The four primary activities conducted by the NCLA are:
  • Industry Direct Research
  • Proprietary Technologies & Commercialisation
  • Outreach & Training
  • Research Services

The centre receives some support for its activities from government agencies and is a not for profit recognised research centre within NUI, Galway.

Associations and Partnerships

The NCLA in association with the Applied Optics Group, is a founding member of the lightHouse Centre for Applied Photonics. LightHouse aims to operate as a Photonics Network which promotes and develops activity in photonics particularly in relation to applied optics and laser technology. A primary activity of lightHouse is the operation of an affiliates club: LightForum.
inspire

Through lightHOUSE, the NCLA is proud to be part of INSPIRE.
INSPIRE is a consortium of all Irish third level institutions with international leading research capability in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
